Want to see the face of totalitarian government? This is JingJing:
JingJing appears on your computer in one of China’s provinces (Shenzhen) when you go online. He watches everything you do and informs the government. His presence is consciously meant to intimidate you. He watches for criminal activity of all kinds: fraud and deception as well as political "crimes" such as criticizing government policies and institutions. He has a companion called ChaCha, a "female" icon who does the same thing. A combination of parts of their names, JingCha, is the word for "police".
Notice that JingJing is cute. The face that the Chinese government has decided to put on its repression is not that of the Orwellian jackboot stamping on a human face forever. No, totalitarianism comes wrapped in cuteness these days. So how could you really object? After all, it’s just the government trying to protect you from evil doers on the internet.
The Chinese internet police think that the US government could get around Google’s recalcitrance in handing over its records by using something similar to JingJing here. Can you imagine a big-eyed icon of George Bush or Hillary Clinton or Condoleezza Rice? Watch for it.
